Facilitated by Sarah Gaer, MA and Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas
At SpeakUpReachOut, we believe that storytelling saves lives. If you are a person who has faced adversity and life challenges, like mental illness, suicidal thoughts, addiction, alcohol and substance misuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, or any other trauma, and you want to learn how to share your story to help others, this is for you.
Join us to learn the “hero’s journey” strategy for how to tell your personal story, to share how you lived through the trials and tribulations of recovery, and to be part of an effort to help others who are now facing similar situations. With group feedback, stories will be perfected and shared. This day-long retreat is facilitated by Sarah Gaer and Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas, storytelling mental health advocates with their own lived experience with mental health and suicide.
Open to community members 18+ who are interested in developing their stories around mental illness, suicidal ideation, substance misuse or other life challenges.
Workshop attendees will:
Learn best practices for safe and impactful storytelling
Explore how storytelling can promote healing and advocacy
Develop narratives appropriate for peer, community, or policy engagement
Receive feedback and support from trained facilitators and peers
