Firearms Safety
Learn How You Can Safeguard Your Home >
Reducing access to lethal means for a person at risk of suicide is an important part of a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention. Firearms are the most lethal among suicide methods and in Eagle County more than 50% of suicides involve a firearm. SpeakUp ReachOut advocates on the federal, state, and community level for funding to prioritize research and provide public education regarding the following topics:
The relationship between suicide and firearms.
Implementation of voluntary off-site storage and safe storage initiatives.
Expansion of lethal means education and counseling practices within healthcare and first response systems.
SpeakUp ReachOut is committed to implementing safe storage initiatives for firearms, as it will be associated with increased safe storage rates, and fewer firearm injuries and fatalities.
To do this, SpeakUp ReachOut is working with local firearm retailers, ranges, instructors, and law enforcement agencies through the Colorado Gun Shop Project (Spanish) and educating the firearm community through the Colorado Office of Gun Violence Prevention about proper safe storage, reporting lost and stolen firearms and implementing lethal means safety training and tools in Eagle, Garfield and Summit Counties.

Do You Have A Firearm Life Plan?
The Firearm Life Plan was developed to help people think about important questions related to their firearms and protect their families from the burden of making difficult decisions without guidance. A Firearm Life Plan is a voluntary, personal plan made between a firearm owner and those they trust.
A Firearm Life Plan will help a firearm owner be prepared. The Firearm Inventory worksheet outlines what someone wants done with their firearms, and when. The Legacy Map lets someone share the importance of firearms in their life and preserve their memories.

Pause To Protect
Secure storage can prevent theft – and it can help save a life.
Pause to Protect is a site for firearm businesses and firearm owners looking to learn more and engage in secure firearm storage.
Firearm owners have different reasons and preferences for secure storage, but most share the view that a responsible firearm owner should prevent unauthorized or inappropriate access.
Storing firearms securely can prevent someone from misusing them – like a curious child playing with a gun, or an intruder stealing a gun.
Secure storage can also also prevent suicide. Suicide is hard to talk about. But it’s important to recognize that, unfortunately, most people have been affected by suicide loss. And, suicide death rates are particularly high among Veteran and military communities. The decision to act can be sudden, so small changes in storing dangerous household items, like firearms, can make a big difference. Bottom line? The safest storage method is the one that will make a firearm hardest to reach during a moment of crisis.
