Counseling on Access to Lethal Means for Clinicians

The CALM Clinical Workshop is a 3.5-hour training that aims to educate those in mental health, medical, and human service professions on how to counsel individuals and their families to temporarily reduce access to firearms and dangerous medications during times of heightened suicide risk. This training will be held in-person.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to list reasons why including means reduction strategies is a critical component of responding to suicide risk.

  2. Participants will be able to competently discuss strategies for increasing means safety with individuals at risk for suicide and their families.

  3. Participants will be able to incorporate means reduction strategies into existing evidence-based safety planning interventions.

Suicide prevention is for everyone. The CALM Clinical Workshop is aimed at those in mental health, medical, or human service professions. It is FREE to attend.

SpeakUp ReachOut is able to provide this course at no cost to participants via a grant specifically aimed towards training residents in Eagle County, Summit County, and Garfield County, Colorado in suicide prevention. As a result, we must first offer this course to Eagle, Summit or Garfield County residents. We require a minimum of 10 registrants to hold this training. SpeakUp ReachOut reserves the right to cancel the training a week in advance.
